There was just the one change to the Chi starting XI that lined up in that late 1-0 win against Hendon at Oaklands Park before Christmas. Mo Jammeh came back into midfield with Prichard dropping to the bench.
Hutchings played the ball forward towards striker Jimmy Wild in the first minute but Udoka Chima got it safely back to Mackenzie Foley in the Robins’ goal.
Right back Ryan Davidson passed back to keeper Kieran Magee 60 seconds later and Wild was adjudged to have his feet up as he tried to control at the other end.
Then Luke Cook conceded a throw which Hutchings took and Wild and Emmett Dunn closed down Mason Saunders-Henry as he pressed for the hosts.
Next, Jammeh and Isaac Bello hooked up but Foley gathered without any trouble and Ben Pashley, accompanying Curtis Da Costa in the centre of the Chi back four, headed a cross from the left calmly to Magee.
The visitors won a loose ball after a poor pass and Jammeh, Bello and Dunn combined to earn Chi a first corner of the match.
Hutchings whipped this over and then struck the post with a tremendous effort when it came back out to him.
Carshalton had the ball in the back of the net on 9 but Cook was flagged offside.
The Robins’ striker then gave away a throw as he struggled to keep the ball in.
The home team won a set-piece for a foul by Dunn on Fabio Camacho-Saraiva which Lloyd Rowlatt bravely blocked for a throw.
Then Hutchings crossed after good work between Rowlatt and Bello and another move at the opposite end involving Oluwafokayo Atewologun and Cook resulted in a goal kick.
Da Costa was well in and passed back to Magee who instigated another Chi attack but Wild lost the ball and it rolled out for a Carshalton throw.
Bello, trying to get forward, was denied easily enough by Foley and the hosts won a corner thanks to Luke Read which Camacho-Saraiva delivered only for a Chi player to get fouled.
It was a bit scrappy for a while as both sides exchanged throws.
A super Chichester move involving Joe Clarke, Bello and Rowlatt might have ended in a spot kick for the visitors but referee Callum Peter wasn’t interested.
Both Bello and custodian Foley received treatment for a lengthy spell following their collision.
As we approached the half hour mark Hutchings defended impressively to hold off Kwaku Frimpong and Pashley diverted the ball for a throw.
Darnell Goather-Braithwaite tried his luck from distance with a speculative attempt that Magee initially mishandled and then gathered at the second go.
Hutchings won Chi a corner off Frimpong which Rowlatt took and Wild miscued.
Next, Clarke couldn’t play Wild in and Foley intercepted as Davidson tried to get to a long ball down the right flank.
Atewologun had a header that wasn’t far off and a couple of Robins’ passes came to nothing.
Da Costa and Dunn then cleared and Davidson and Wild got Chi going once more but the ball was safely returned to Foley.
As we approached the interval Clarke cut out a Carshalton pass and found Bello who was fouled.
Hutchings took the subsequent free-kick magnificently and all Foley could do was get a despairing glove on it as the visitors took the lead.
Cook tried to get in after good work from Frimpong and some teammates.
Wild then had a shot on the turn which Foley was alert to and moments later failed to get any real power on another go as the half time whistle went.
Neither side made any changes at the break and a Robins’ attack fizzled out down the right a minute in.
Rowlatt then won the ball and moved it on to Bello only for the hosts to earn a goal kick.
Moments later Bello combined with Wild for a reverse pass that ended in a Foley save and a Chi corner.
Rowlatt played the ball back in and Davidson headed over the bar.
Next, Hutchings calmly chested back an Abdul Sankoh cross to Magee and both teams exchanged throw-ins as they pressed.
In the 54th minute Clarke picked Bello for a lovely shot which Foley was equal to this time and conceded a corner.
Hutchings took this from the right and the home side cleared before Jammeh made a decent tackle as Carshalton broke.
The hosts then snuffed out the danger posed by Jammeh when Chichester got a decent move going on the hour mark.
Rowlatt, Wild and Bello linked up before Jammeh was impeded. Nothing came of the free-kick though.
Magee had to get out to tackle Cook and Jammeh couldn’t make a solid connection following a neat exchange between Rowlatt, Bello and Dunn.
One of the home side’s players got a talking to for a foul on Hutchings with 25 minutes to go and Atewologun out-muscled Bello down the right wing.
On 68 Wild couldn’t get enough power to threaten Foley before the hard-working Bello was replaced by Prichard and the Robins also rang the changes.
Read’s effort from some distance was simple enough for Magee and then Hutchings raced up the left flank to win Chi another corner which Rowlatt delivered but no one could get a header.
Dunn, Prichard and Wild probed for a cross with no end product before Rowlatt’s fierce shot was saved by Foley.
Next, Goather-Braithwaite cut inside and attempted to lob Magee but to no avail and both sides swapped offsides.
Wild had a go with 10 to go but struck wide of the mark and Olly Munt was introduced for Rowlatt.
Camacho-Saraiva dragged his team back into it with an excellent equaliser on 83 and then Foley, who’d made some decent saves, slipped up in the 86th minute and Prichard was on hand to punish him with what proved to be the winner.
A Camacho-Saraiva cross was too easy for Magee as the home side countered and Munt hooked away Sankoh’s ball moments later.
The Chi keeper claimed Sanders-Henry delivery in time added on and the Surrey side won a corner off Clarke before Magee beat Kola Salami to the ball as the visitors held on for their 10th point from the last 12.
They travel to Bognor on New Year’s Day for a local derby (Kick Off 3pm).
