Both sides fielded changed starting XIs to the ones that lined up against each other in Chi’s comfortable first league victory at ‘home’ last month at Bognor’s MKM Arena.
Isaac Bello slotted in for the injured Rob Hutchings at left back; the ever-tenacious Joe Moore came into centre mid; Lee Seok-jae offered Joe Clarke support up top; and Conrad Honore, who bagged one in that 5-0 mauling of Hythe last time out, got the nod.
Chichester had a free Saturday at the weekend because of the FA Trophy, while Lancing were thumped 6-2 in that competition away at Ascot United.
Clarke was flagged offside as Moore played him in after only sixty seconds, and at the other end Bello did well to guide the ball back to Chi keeper Kieran Magee following a neat exchange between James Hull and Callum Dowdell.
Then Ben Pashley’s characteristic ping found Lee but a defender was alert before Ethan Prichard, the intended target for Pashley on this occasion, strayed offside.
Next, Lee’s set-piece came to nothing after Dowdell had handballed and Prichard won the first corner of the match which Lee swung in and Emmett Dunn headed just wide.
A nice bit of skill by Prichard a minute or so later as he twisted and turned earned the away team a throw-in before Honore somehow struck the woodwork after Will Berry diverted his attempt on to the post and out for a corner kick.
Alieu Secka claimed a long Bello throw moments before Curtis Da Costa picked out Prichard and the visitors had another corner that Lee whipped across and Lancing managed to block a couple of follow up shots.
Former Chi player Tyrone Madhani was cautioned on 23 for seemingly kicking the ball away before Lee and Prichard hooked up for a shot on the swivel, although the No11 was offside anyway.
Bello did well to snuff out the threat posed by Noel Fisher and Dowdell just after the half hour mark; Da Costa then broke through only for Honore to be impeded; and a decent challenge by skipper-for-the-night Ryan Davidson put paid to a rare Lancing raid.
Super touches by Jaevon Dyer set up a chance for the hosts but Magee was on hand to save the subsequent header and Noel Fisher joined Madhani in the ref’s notepad.
Further trickery from Dyer in the 38th minute got Lancing into the box once more but Chi cleared their lines and then a brilliant move involving Pashley, Bello, Davidson, and Bello again, on the stroke of half time teed up a lovely Honore downwards header for the opening goal.
And only the post denied Clarke’s thunderous effort in time added on and halted Chichester from doubling their lead.
Kyle Sim was introduced at the break and Dyer passed up a shoo-in opportunity three minutes after the restart heading straight at Magee.
His counterpart Secka was then forced into a save moments later and Berry cleared off the line to avoid a second goal.
Another chance came and went on 51, prevented only by resolute defending.
But there was nothing Lancing could do when Prichard ghosted inside and scored in-off Secka.
Moore drove into the area in a purple patch for the visitors and tucked the ball cleanly away to make it 3-0.
Next, Moore’s timely tackle broke things up and Honore was scythed down as Chichester pressed.
The away side conceded a corner that Dowdell took only for Sim to foul Da Costa at the back stick.
A triple Lancing substitution on the hour saw Harry Heath, Alex Plummer and ex-Chi man Lucas Franzen-Jones replace Dowdell and the two Fishers.
Lee drilled his long-ranger narrowly over ahead of Clarke being exchanged for Olly Munt in the 64th minute.
Davidson was subsequently yellow carded for a late challenge on Dan Hull and Shay Matthews came on for Charlie Gibson who’d picked up a knock.
Secka was out swiftly to prevent Prichard from getting to the ball and the Lancers won a curious corner from which sub Plummer wasn’t far off.
Prichard put the away side 4-0 up with his fifth goal in three games in all competitions – a crisp finish with 15 minutes to go.
Jack Lumsden was introduced for Da Costa at CB and U23s player Kieran Jones slotted in for Prichard.
Madhani’s free-kick some 25 yards out went close on 80; Pashley intervened magnificently to break up a slick series of passes between five Lancing players; and Magee beat Dyer to the ball.
Franzen-Jones and Lee got booked for separate incidents and the Culver Road outfit went very close to pulling one back on 87 before Lumsden hooked away and the Lancers blazed over.
Honore was cautioned late on as the referee signalled seven minutes of stoppage time.
There was still time however for more drama as Secka denied Kieran Jones; Franzen-Jones, who scored both Lancing’s goals in that 6-2 loss to Ascot at the weekend, fired wide; and Jones in the 96th minute struck an effort beyond Secka for 5-0.
And Chichester switched off at the death when Heath grabbed a consolation with practically the last kick of the game.
So, Chi march on to the next round, but first it’s Beckenham Town away in an Isthmian League South East encounter on Saturday 30th September (Kick Off 3pm).
